ABOUT

Greetings,

Thank you for visiting my site! I am a piano teacher and accompanist from Newton, and I have been working in the Greater Boston area since 2019. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano from the Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia, but I enjoy playing classical as well.

I give private lessons Monday thru Friday for kids and adults of all ages and experience levels. I am seeking piano students ages 6 and up, and I teach everyone ranging from complete beginners to advanced pianists. My teaching style is best described as relaxed, yet thorough and challenging. Lessons can be at your home as long as you have a piano or keyboard.

I also work with other musicians as an accompanist, and I’m always excited to hear from vocalists and instrumentalists who need help rehearsing for a performance, learning new music, or preparing for an audition. Please reach out to me if you’d like to collaborate!

I also like to play live music. My repertoire includes jazz standards, some well-known classical pieces, and improvisations. Contact me for more information if you need a pianist for a live event.

The best way to get in touch with me is through email, mine is danw2015@gmail.com. You can also call my cell phone at this number: (857)-636-0054. If I don’t answer the phone, please leave me a message and I’ll try to call back within 24 hours.

Sincerely,

Danny Whalen

PRIVATE LESSONS

I offer lessons to students ages 6 and up in the following towns: Belmont, Dedham, Natick, Needham, Newton, Waltham, Watertown, Wellesley, and Weston. No prior experience is necessary to start lessons, but I teach advanced students as well as beginners.

Here are some things that are important to me in lessons: that students enjoy their time at the piano and look forward to each new lesson, that students learn how to read music, that students feel encouragement and know their strengths and weaknesses, that students acquire tools to utilize their practice time effectively, and that students play with good form, time, and expression.

I often use a combination of Faber’s Piano Adventures series and Suzuki’s piano course. Faber does an excellent job teaching students how to read music, and it works on basic technical and theoretical concepts. Suzuki’s method is great for its emphasis on listening to the pieces as you learn them, and it has a great repertoire as well. I supplement these two methods with other music as needed.

My rates for private lessons are as follows:

30 minute lesson- $40

45 minute lesson- $60

60 minute lesson- $80
